In the world of traditional horse sport, we often consider a weekend clinic with George Morris to be the ultimate equestrian training challenge. But in Hungary, there is a master who will test your riding skill in a manner rarely seen in modern times. World-famous Hungarian horse-archer Lajos Kassai is a master bowyer and the founder of modern horseback archery. His training facilities are not for the faint of heart!
Each year between Christmas and the New Year, members of the Kassai Horseback Archery School gather in the Kassia Valley near Kaposmérő to train in the harshest of winter conditions. In January 2014, even actor Matt Damon sought out the skills of Kassai to practice horse archery in preparation for his role in the upcoming film “The Great Wall, set for release at the end of 2016.
Now, for the first time, mere mortals are being given a glimpse inside this unique training facility without having to mount up for the challenge. The much-awaited premier of Géza Kaszás’ documentary film about Kassai will be held on January 21, 2016 in Hungary, and the recently released movie trailer provides a peek into Kassai’s winter training camp.
