Steffen Peters and his famous mount Legolas received a hero’s welcome at the Longines Masters in Los Angeles last weekend. While the event primarily focuses on showjumping, the local California Olympian and recent Pan American Games individual and team Gold medallist was on hand to show audiences all that the sport of dressage has to offer.
Crowds hooped and hollered as the pair performed their Grand Prix Freestyle to a custom version of “Ice Ice Baby” and Coldplay’s “Fix You” on Friday and Saturday evening. For those truly interested in learning more about the sport of dressage, the Saturday afternoon demonstration was a distinct treat. Peters presented movements like the half pass, passage and pirouettes in isolation, giving the audience insight on how he does each so well.
After each performance, Peters made a plea to bring more world class dressage competitions, of the quality of the Longines Masters for showjumping, to California, and the United States as large. Perhaps the lovely arena may play home to more than just jumpers in the future?
In the meantime, enjoy Peters and Legolas’s joyful rendition of their competition Grand Prix Freestyle from Saturday night.
