Wranglers National Finals Rodeo 2014
When Hank Williams rolled in to Las Vegas in the early 1950s, he felt out of place among the crooners that usually entertained the dinner crowds. My how times have changed! Now for the 30th year in a row, Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is on in Sin City, turning it into one heck of a Cowboy town. Ol’ Hank would fit right in!
Officially, National Finals Rodeo or “NFR” is ten nights of traditional rodeo competition with millions of dollars up for grabs. But the riding going on in Thomas & Mack Center is really just the beginning. There are concerts every night from legends and newcomers like Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, Jr. Alabama, Lady Antebellum, Heart, John Prine, and Easton Corbin just to name a few! Or you can try the annual Buck’n Ball if you want to do a little line dancing.
During the day, the Cowboy Christmas Gift Show offers enough western wares to keep even the most avid shopper entertained for all ten days. Navigating the more than 300,000-square feet of show floor and some 400 exhibitors from across the United States and Canada really is a full days work. But you’ll be sure to find something for just about every sensibility.
There is even a best dressed contest that runs along side the main NFR events. Named for the daring trick rider who brought style, glamour and spirit to the rodeo arena, the Jerry Ann Taylor Award is now giving in her memory to the Best Dressed Barrel Racer at NFR. The odds on favorite for the title this year is Fallon Taylor who is known to wear more than her fair share of extravagant outfits. Here she is all decked out in Las Vegas spirit for Round #2.
So if you ever happen to find yourself in Las Vegas during the first two weeks of December between now and at least 2024, be ready to cowboy/cowgirl up and do the NFR in style! For more information on attending the rodeo or watching it on television, try the official website: NFR Experience.
