While flashbulbs and headlines may only wiz around equines in their prime, like California Chrome, Valegro and Cortez C, it is a well-known fact that every horse has a story to tell, especially the seniors. Through the lens of expert Canadian photographer, Andrea Blair, 45 very special senior horses will finally have their stories told this holiday season thanks to the release of her new book, “The Senior Horse Project.”
In the author’s words, the “Senior Horse Project” is a collection of “photographs of 45 elderly horses accompanied by a few words about them and what they have accomplished.” But if a picture is worth a thousand words, then this coffee table book is more like a novel. It is filled with photographs that capture the very essences of an aging horse, along side the kind words of the families that love them – like Sleipnir, the 32-year-old Icelandic horse who found a new life and purpose with a Canadian family, and the story of a Prince, who found the love of his lifetime just in time with a 3-year-old girl.
This collection of photographs has also been a labor of love for Blair over the past four years. After losing a senior horse or her own, she set to find and photograph these senior horses with all sorts of stories and found a mission in the meantime. In fact, Blair discovered her mission has so much importance that she will be begin work on volume two of the Senior Horse Project in 2015!
