Year of the Horse Cover

Tonight equestrians everywhere should be celebrating the Lunar New Year, ushering in The Year of the Horse!  And what kind of celebration would it be without music?  So start moving your feet to these fine tracks and let’s embrace this New Year, which promises fast victories, unexpected adventures, surprising romance, and an all around wild ride!

Make no mistake.  This is more of a Barney Stinson-style “Get Psyched Mix” than most of my compilations.  As Barney says, “Now, people often think a good mix should rise and fall, but people are wrong.  It should be ALL RISE, baby!  So prepare yourselves for an audio journey into the white-hot center of adrenaline… Bam!”  What else would you expect from the magnificent Year of the Horse?

1. THIS WILL BE OUR YEAR by The Zombies from the album Odessey And Oracle

“This will be our year.  Took a long time to come,” sing The Zombies in this track from their 1968 album Odessey and Oracle.  The irony is 1968 was not The Zombies’ year.  Indeed the band had already broken up before the album was reluctantly released by their label that year, with a misspelling on the front cover to boot.  Yet, seemingly on it’s own momentum, the album went on to be a critical and commercial success, fueled primarily by their counter-culture anthem, “Time of the Season.”  Eventually the band reunited in the 1990s, and they are touring still today.

As for this particular song, it was eventually appreciated in it’s own right.  It was included on Pitchfork Media’s list “The 200 Greatest Songs of the 1960s” and was fourth best recording of last year at the Daytrotter studios.  The point is, it may be a long time coming, but your year will come.  And for us equestrians, it’s finally here so let’s celebrate!

2. HARVEST MOON by Poolside from the album Pacific Standard Time

The Lunar New Year or Chinese New Year is not actually just one day, but rather starts with the New moon on the first day of the first lunar month and ends on the Full moon 15 days later.  So it is only appropriate that we should warm up our dancing feet with this cover Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon,” that celebrates stepping out under the moon.  Particularly since Neil Young is a big fan of The Year of the Horse.  It is the name given to the 1997 documentary directed by Jim Jarmusch following Neil Young and Crazy Horse on their 1996 tour and its accompanying live album.

3. JANUARY WHITE by Sleeping At Last from the album Yearbook

This evening we usher out The Year of the Snake, along with all its pros and cons, and start anew.  And this time it’s our year, The Year of the Horse.  So let’s do as Sleeping At Last suggests, and remember, “the future is brighter than any flashback,” as we prepare for all the success, adventure, and romance in the year to come!

4. ON TOP OF THE WORLD by Imagine Dragons from the album Night Visions

The preparation begins by dancing for success.  Imagine Dragons sing of paying dues in the dirt and learning the virtues of not cutting corners.  These are lessons equestrians know well both literally and figuratively.  But now the time for waiting and paying dues is over.  We’re on top of the world, yeah!

5. THE WALKER by Fitz and the Tantrums from the album More Than Just A Dream

Victory in The Year of the Horse is not only certain it is fast.  So get ready to outpace your competition with “The Walker” by Fitz and the Tantrums, singing “99 miles per hour baby, is how fast that I like to go.  Can’t keep up with my rhythm, though they keep trying.  Too quick for the lines they throw.  I walk to the sound of my own drum!”

When the horoscopes predict romance in The Year of the Horse, I feel it’s safe to assume that “The Right Type” will naturally be a knight in shining armor as promised by Chromeo in this track.

9. SAFE AND SOUND by Capital Cities from the album In A Tidal Wave Of Mystery

What else could an equestrian ask from the world but to be safe and sound?  Certainly that’s what we’d want for our horses.  Why not have it in the romance department too?  That’s exactly what this track from Capital Cities promises, and its worth dancing for indeed.

10. ENJOY THE RIDE by Krewella from the album Get Wet
