We pretend to go to the horse show but everyone really knows it’s a circus!

Bring on the clowns! And the horses too!

Every Friday Counter-Canter Culture features the important US and International Horse Shows currently under way.

Olympia The London International Horse Show 2013

Olympia, London’s International Horse Show is a celebrated combination of sporting action, amazing acts and festive fun.  Known as the best equestrian Christmas party, this annual event treats 300 competitors, 400 horses, and over 85,000 spectators to FEI World Cup™ Jumping and Dressage, as well as a host of entertaining equestrian exhibitions.

The show opened on Monday to a performance of The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Arts’ world-famous ‘How the Andalusian Horses Dance’ show in full.  These riders, who had not visited London for more than 40 years, draw on the traditions of cattle ranching and classical dressage to create a world-class equestrian ballet.  Get a flavor of the spectacle with this video.

On Wednesday, the much-loved Shetland Pony Grand National raced into the hearts of onlookers.  This adorable pony steeplechase has raised over £500,000 for Great Ormond Street Hospital since its conception.  I’m sure you’ll see why with this video of last years race.

Thursday The Duchess of Cornwall oversaw much of the day’s activities, including awarding the winners of The Kingsland Christmas Speed Stake and The Alltech Puissance.  Later, Camilla met with some of the riders backstage from The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, The Shetland Pony Grand National and the Christmas Finale.

Speaking of the fabulous Christmas Finale set for Saturday, December 21, this year’s is entitled ‘It’s a Dickens of a Christmas’ and promises to include a visit from Santa Clause himself before he gets to work preparing for his busiest night of the year.

If you are lucky enough to be in the UK this holiday season, then there are many opportunities to watch the action at Olympia live on the BBC.  If not, you can get live updates on Twitter by following @olympiahorse and @horseandhound.
